Avoid Over Decorating

Over decorating. Yes, over decorating is a huge no no. I know you love everything home decor and I do too! But a little too much will go a long way in making your room look and feel very stuffy and cluttered. Therefore, ruining the very thing you were aiming for. Which is a simply decorated beautiful space.

Instead, try just a few simple pieces of some of your favorite decor and see for yourself how far a little goes.

Do you remember when you first started to wear and learn how to put on make up? I don’t know about you but there were times I had way too much on! Lol. My mom would always say, a little goes a long way. In design world this applies as well. 🙂

No color scheme

Another thing you need to avoid is not having a color scheme set for your whole home.

Set a color scheme that you want your home to have and decorate around the furniture that you own.

For instance, if you have a red couch you don’t want to paint your walls yellow, that just wouldn’t look good.

Instead focus on the colors that would go well with your red couch, like an ivory or neutral wall color to make the red stand out. Adding little subtle red decor around the house, to where the red acts as an accent and is not overwhelming the room.

Wall art

Having too little and too much wall art can make or break the room. Having too little wall art hung up will make your room look very bare and empty. As for a room that has too much wall art may overwhelm the room by making it look small and even cluttered.

To find the perfect balance, I would suggest adding just a few picture frames while subtly hanging up your favorite wall art with it. (If you feel that piece would go well with what you are trying to do.)

Remember to have fun and don’t be afraid to show your style, you’ll do great!

Have a Theme

When it comes to decorating, you always want to have a theme in mind. Are you wanting your home to look like you took a step in the old west with western style? Do you want a farmhouse feel? Victorian? Modern or Rustic? What is the theme that makes you, you.

Not having a theme in mind when decorating will make it hard for you to set the goals and design around the theme that you are aiming for.

Your home in the long run will not piece together the way you had planned or wanted.

Furniture Lay Out

How do you have your furniture laid out in your home?

Furniture lay out can make a huge difference when it comes to making your space look open and inviting or small and enclosed.

I suggest the easiest way to have your furniture laid out is by working around the middle of your rooms floor. Making sure that your couch is not in the middle of the room by cutting it in half will ensure you have an open space.

You want the space in that room to look open and feel roomy, so when placing your furniture keep this rule in mind. I find that this helps me when deciding where I should place my furniture.

Making your room look bigger and brighter should be the goal.

Some rooms are very small and there just isn’t any room no matter how hard you try to make room. (I totally understand that.) But sometimes it can be avoided and helped just by re-arranging that living room or bedroom.

Curtains

The next thing you should avoid when decorating is short curtains. Curtains play a vital role when it comes to decorating your space, so let’s ensure that they are the length that your room needs.

The curtains should be long enough to where they almost meet the floor. This not only looks great but has an amazing effect for not only making your windows look bigger but your ceilings taller.

Area Rug

Believe it or not, but your area rug size has a huge impact on how your room will look as well. To find the perfect size rug for your room you need to look at the space you have in that room and choose the size that would fit under all of your furniture’s legs.

Imagine this living room having a small rug that only covered part of under the couch. It would not do anything now would it.

But having an appropriate rug size for the room makes a huge difference in decorating and makes it very inviting and cozy.

Avoid Dark Colors

The last step of the 8 steps to avoid when decorating is dark colored paint. Paint has an amazing effect when it comes to making a room look big or small. So choosing the right paint color is critical.

I would suggest staying away from really dark colors.

Dark colors will make a room look smaller than in actuality and let’s face it, it’s not as easy on the eyes either.

Using lighter paint colors such as, white, ivory, light gray, or a light canvas color can really make the room look so much bigger and brighter than if it was to be painted with any dark paint color.

If this room was painted a dark color, you wouldn’t be able to focus on anything other than the walls because they would stand out much more, therefore making the room feel cramped and closed in!

This bedroom below is a great example of choosing the right paint color. The soft lighter tone leaves a warm, cozy and comfortable feeling.
