Put away the Christmas Decor

Of course the first step is a no brainer when it comes to decorating your home for winter after Christmas. In order to do that you have to say goodbye to the Christmas decor for another year, so that you can have winter vibes throughout your home until spring.

You don’t have to put away all of your Christmas decor though, just anything that says Merry Christmas, decorative elves, Christmas trees and anything that reminds you or looks like Christmas.

If you have greenery that doesn’t look too Christmassy, you can hold off on storing those for a few months. You might as well take advantage of some of your Christmas/winter decor during this time. Which is the next step.

Use Winter Greenery

Another way that I like to decorate my home after Christmas, is by keeping all of my winter greenery out until spring. If you already have some greenery that you use in your Christmas decorating, then don’t put those away just yet. Use them for the next upcoming winter months.

On my bathroom shelf I decided to keep the pine needles out, as they remind me and give me winter feelings.

Also, on my coffee bar I decided to keep my winter greenery out as well. I decided to remove the pinecones that I had in front of it and use it somewhere else in my home.

In my living room I decided to keep the snow covered greenery as well, even though it has a tiny bit of red in it. I think that it is so pretty with the snow covered pine needles to remind me that winter is still here.

Decorate using Pine Cones

Pine cones are another great decor item to use when you are decorating for winter after Christmas. I have used individual pinecones around in my home by placing them individually on shelves, in a basket all grouped and so forth throughout my home in the past.

However, if you have cats, they love to steal and play with the pinecones. Haha! So this year I have not brought them out, I have just a few pinecones up high where they can’t steal and play with.

On my kitchen shelf I added a couple pinecones next to a galvanized pitcher. I got rid of my winter wall art and decided to add a cute pitcher and pinecones instead.

These pinecones I had on my coffee bar in front of the pine needles during Christmas but I wanted to add something a little extra in my living room tray. As I took away a wooden Christmas sign and pine needles with Cranberries on the tray, the tray was looking a little empty. So I decided to add a small touch of these.

Use Plaid

Now you don’t have to use plaid if you don’t use it already. I usually use some plaid around my home during Christmas and also keep it hanging around long after Christmas, just because it mostly reminds me of cold, wintery days.

I don’t use a ton of plaid just a little bit in my living room and then a plaid runner on our dresser in our master bedroom. I also have red plaid throw pillows for our bedroom during Christmas but because those are red and remind me of Christmas I change those out to black.

Put away the Red and Gold

To get your home ready for the next winter months in January up until spring, you will need to retire the red and gold Christmas decor. Red and gold have huge Christmas vibes, so storing away all of your red Christmas decor is something you will want to do, if you are looking to decorate your home for the upcoming winter months.

During Christmas I had some pretty poinsettias that I had placed on my bathroom shelf in a tin with a gold pinecone sitting next to it.

Now that Christmas is done I brought out a bunch of white flowers that I usually use even during spring. I really like the bunch of flowers together. What about you?

Add more Neutrals or Pops of color

By taking out the red and gold from Christmas, now it is time to replace it either with neutrals or by adding your own style with pops of color into your home. I am a huge fan of neutrals but I also love color too.

I love the color teal, so I add in a few pieces of pops of teal in with my neutral decor. In my living room I have some teal curtains and then a nice picture frame also in my living room with some of the same colors.

Of course, on my coffee bar I found this cute rustic teal candle holder that I knew I would use along in my home. These are just a few of the pops of color that I have added in with my decorating.

If you have not tried adding subtle hints of color into your home then now is the time to give it a try. Try adding in subtle pops of color that is a color that you love. You can do this by using decorative pillows with the color that you want, use some vases around your home, curtains, rugs with pops of color and so forth.

Use Winter Scents

Another great way that I like to get myself into the winter mood after Christmas is to burn or melt some winter scents into my home. They don’t remind me of Christmas but they remind me that winter is still here.

Some of my favorite wax melt scents to use are:

Add Extra Layers

Adding extra layers is my favorite part about winter and Christmas. I am always cold to begin with so adding extra layers around my home make my home feel warm and cozy for the remaining winter months. Plus who doesn’t love fluffy blankets nearby to cuddle up with?

I usually layer up my home by layering up decorative pillows on my bed. And then on the couch I like to throw a blanket on the side to make it look comfy and cozy in our living room. The cat seems to really like it! Haha

And then next to our couch I have a basket where I can throw extra blankets for us to grab when we get cold.

So, experiment and try layering your home this winter and make your place feel warm and cozy til spring.

Add Your Own Style

Last but not least, don’t forget to add your own style. These are just a few tips and ideas to help you decorate your home for winter after Christmas. There is no right or wrong way when it comes to decorating your space. Just have fun with decorating your home and trying new things.

I am always experimenting with my home by either moving furniture around or moving my decor around into different rooms to make it look different and see where it looks best! Sometimes you just have to change stuff around to make a room look new!
