How to decorate your home on a Budget

Don’t Buy everything all at once

The first step to decorating with a budget, is to not feel like you have to buy everything all at once. Taking your time with getting things to decorate your home is a process and it should be a fun process!

Don’t rush or pressure yourself into thinking that you have to have all of the nice things now! Take it slow and enjoy the decorating process, getting into debt is never worth it.

Shop at thrift stores and Garage Sales

At thrift stores and garage sales, you can find some awesome decorating items that you can use for decorating your home. There are people that pay a lot of money for something that is new and then wind up donating them a year or two later down the road, due to them replacing it with something new or they found that they never used it.

You can find some great items in thrift stores which we will talk about below. 🙂

Furniture

Me and my husband have bought many of our furniture from thrift stores and garage sales that we otherwise couldn’t afford. The great thing is even if it is an old beat up bookshelf, you can make it look like brand new with a little paint, so keep that in mind too!

Decorating Items

There are many Decorating items you can find in thrift stores and garage sales. From curtains, tabletop decor items, affordable picture frames and even decorative vases or dishes. You may not find what you are looking for at times but in those cases just wait and something is sure to show up.

There are times I have gone into a thrift store and didn’t find what I really had in mind but found something else that I could use for decorating my home. When you see it you will know it!

Never Pay Full Price

Shop Clearance Aisles

When it comes to decorating on a budget you learn that home decor items are not cheap. You never want to pay full price for an expensive item that you could probably get online for cheaper that has a coupon or has an online sale going on.

I am definitely guilty of shopping clearance aisles at Target, Kohl’s and Bed Bath and Beyond. I have found some cute throw pillows, mugs, picture frames, etc. in clearance aisles.

Use Coupons

I love using coupons when it comes to shopping. How about you? There are some great coupon apps that you can use now a days and it makes the shopping experience fun and exciting. I love using Bed, Bath and Beyond coupons because they never expire. Hobby Lobby, Michaels and Kohl’s always have coupons going on as well, so you might as well take advantage of those. 🙂

Set Aside Money

Setting aside money every month keeps you from over spending. When you set aside 20 or more dollars a month towards a home fund, you don’t really feel it in your bank account as much because it is out of sight out of mind, per se. 😉 Plus you would be surprised at how fast your fund builds up after your paycheck and within a month.

Decorate With What You Have

Decorating with what you have is another great option for when it comes to decorating your home on a budget. You may not realize the treasure you have sitting right inside your own home.

Do you have an old piece of furniture that just needs some love or a picture frame that just needs repainted? By updating your picture frames or an old piece of furniture you will soon realize that you don’t have to spend a ton of money on a new piece when you just need to re-purpose the treasure that you already have. 🙂

Old Throw Pillows

Using old throw pillows is a great option. I have used my throw pillows for over a year before I finally updated them with some new covers that I found on Amazon for cheap. I didn’t like the colors of them for the longest time but it saved me from having to buy pillows to place my new pillow covers over that I have on them now.

Re-purpose old furniture

Re-purpose your old picture frames, bookshelves, etc. I don’t know about you but I love looking on pinterest to see different before and after pictures of re-purposed furniture. It inspires me to look at old furniture with new eyes and give it a new and updated look. 🙂

Use free printables to decorate

Looking for some great pictures to place into your frames? Use free printables to decorate your space. There are over thousands of printables that you can print and use! From flowers, spices, farmhouse and inspirational quotes! There are many websites that offer free printables! Pick your style, print and showcase in your favorite frame.

Use Greenery

Using greenery is great for when it comes to decorating! Use a real plant or a fake plant.

I am really bad when it comes to keeping live plants alive! I either water them too much or don’t water them enough, but if you are great with plants and have a green thumb, then I would definitely venture out and decorate while using real plants!

Throughout the year and seasons, I rotate fake greenery in designated spots around my home. From Spring to Winter, I use vases and rotate fake plants and flowers to make my home festive for the holidays and so forth.

Make Small Updates

Making small updates to your home is another great option for making your home look decorated without spending a fortune.

Paint

The first small update your can do is paint. Paint is a miracle worker. If you are looking to decorate your home on a budget, then painting your walls is a great option. Lighter paint colors are great when it comes to making your room more up to date.

Lighter paint colors also play a huge role in making your room look much bigger than it really is! If you have a small bedroom or living room, try using a light paint color such as white, cream, light gray, tan, etc. and see how it will transform your room!

Change faucets, lighting, etc.

Changing your old short faucets to a new swan faucet, will make your home look not only more up to date but it’s amazing how a new faucet can add a decorated look as well. Try changing your old faucets, light fixtures and plug in outlets with more up to date versions. 🙂
